Cairns: snorkeling, scuba, sun, oh my!

The second leg of my amazing Spring Break adventure took me way up north to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef, where I spent three days soaking in the true Australian sun, plus one extra special day which I will explain later on! I was staying at JJ's Backpackers which turned out to be a really nice hostel with both breakfast and dinner being provided! All the hostels around Cairns had a deal set up with a local pub called the Woolshed where we were given meal tickets for each night and a variety of set meals to choose from. I was very pleased plus each night they had some sort of entertainment planned for everyone eating.

You can't swim right off the coastline because of poisonous jelly fish and stingers so there was a large pool/lagoon built right in the middle of town where everyone goes to cool off in the water and tan. This is where I spent the majority of my first day, just relaxing, napping in the sun, reading, swimming, and of course working on my tan (sunscreen was always worn mum!). Ate lunch at a lovely little Italian sandwhich cafe and walked the shops. A very good day one. I had to be up and going the next morning around 6:30am so it was early to bed for me. Who said anything about sleeping in on this holiday!

Day two: Snorkeling at Green Island out in the middle of the reef!! The boat ride took a little over an hour to reach the island and in that time I made a friend from Wisconsin who was on a two week holiday. Since April is a prominent month for stingers and jelly fish around the reef, it was recommended that if you are snorkeling, you should get a full-body stinger suit, and I didn't want to take any chances by having my day ruined by a stinger and all that pain. The suits may have been practical and meaningful, but they certainly were not fashionable!!  I saw so many incredible looking fish that I barely ever looked up to see where I was going. So many different colors: teal, yellow, black, orange and the fish were everywhere around the coral and in the reef. I saw an eel, spotted sting ray, and my favorite... BABY TURTLE!! I was a very happy girl. I think I followed the turtle for a good 15 mins taking 30+ photos and 2 videos of it. So so so so cool!

Day Three: Today I would be aboard the Sea Quest vessel doing my Introductory scuba dive! So excited yet so nervous all at the same time. Boy did I have butterflies as I walked up to the edge of the boat to jump in with all my gear. My biggest fear: contacts getting washed out! The day was perfect with blue skies, hot and the most amazing colors of blue and teal for the water. After getting briefed on all the procedures that will take place in the water like hand signals and basic skills to learn, it was time to get all suited up. We had to wear a weighted belt along with the very heavy gear. I struggled to stand up with everything on. The group of four intro divers plus our guide made our way quickly and most importantly correctly through all our skills, then it was off to explore and scuba!! I was the first one of the group to spot a group of Nemo fish which I quickly begin to freak out about because it was soooo cool!!!! i was smiling on the inside the whole time. What a different view compared to snorkeling. Even got my photo taken by a professional while underwater! I ended up doing two dives that day because I had enjoyed it so much and when was I sure I was going to get another opportunity to scuba dive in the Great Barrier Reef! The rest of the day I snorkeled and chatted with all the other passengers and crew.

Day Four: My flight was supposed to leave Cairns around 2am for Melbourne on the very, very cheap Tiger Airways. Around midnight it was announced that the flight was canceled, oh joy! I was able to get another flight for the next night with Virgin Air. Luckily, I made three friends while standing in the front of the line so we all got two really nice rooms at the Holiday Inn in town. We were a great mix of internationals from: England, Italy, Norway, and myself. We laughed the whole night and next day while laying by the pool reading and napping before finally heading to the airport. Luckily, my flight to Melbourne this time was not canceled!!

April 9-10 : Kangaroo Island (Day 2)

After a hearty breakfast of toast with yummy Nutella and tea, then it was time to all pile back into the bus to head off to our first destination: Snake Lagoon Hike. The hike wasn't too challenging and had great views along the way. It eventually led us to a private beach, however, it was too windy to truly enjoy it. The scenery was amazing and lucky for all of us, the weather held of just long enough to get back safely to the bus before it started to rain!

Next stop: Admirals Arch!
Home to New Zealand Fur Seals who were everywhere napping and soaking up the sun on the rocks. Breathtaking views of the ocean and rocks, all leading up to the famous Arch. The massive waves turned the water the most incredible blue I had even seen. It was sure windy and chilly checking everything out! Sadly, I don't think my pictures to it justice. But, enjoy!

From there it was onto my favorite stop of the whole trip. I could have spent all day here if I could, but sadly we only had a few hours. It was time to explore the Remarkable Rocks and boy were they quite remarkable!!! They sat right on the edge of a cliff and had been slowly eroded away by the wind and salt water. We could climb all over them and take a million photos. Some had the most unusual shapes, like a birds beak or had a hole missing in the middle that a person could fit inside. Just makes you wonder how long it took them to become this way. So so so cool!!! And this is only a tiny fraction of the photos I took around the rocks!

After spending most of the afternoon around the rocks, we headed to the Kelly Caves for a quick look around before it was time to get a quick fish and chips while waiting for the ferry back to mainland Australia. Overall, a very special trip with lots of unique opportunities and memories!

April 9-10 : Kangaroo Island (Day 1)

My travels began with a weekend trip to Kangaroo Island, which is located off the coast of Adelaide, by taking a 2 hour ferry. Our tour company was through Groovy Grape and they were wonderful! Our guide was very knowledgeable and super funny. We only were there for two days, so each was crammed full with as many activities as possible! First stop, was a climb up Prospect Hill to check out the views of the entire island. Learned all about the history and the explorer's who sailed around the island.

Next stop was Emu Ridge, which is an Eucalyptus Distillery. They are also home of the most adorable baby Kangaroo which the owners rescued and now she lives with them. We arrived just as the kangaroo was about to take a nap and it was the cutest thing ever! They are one of the largest manufactures of eucalyptus oil and products in all of Australia and I think even the world. Wow! They also had Emu's on the grounds we could feed. It smelled so good in their store!

From there it was to the beach to view a colony of Australian Sea-lions relaxing on the beach. We took a guided tour which lead us right down onto the beach and probably only 30 ft away from groups of babies, females, and males all resting on the beach. They fish non-stop out at sea for three days then come in for a three day rest, then repeat. The babies were adorable and looked almost like stuff animals! Being right down on the beach was such an amazing opportunity to get that close to wild-life. I took so many photos but will only put a few up on here!

Last stop (and probably the craziest stop) was at the "Sahara Desert" for sand boarding!! The sky was crystal blue and the sand literally looked like we were at a proper desert. After hiking up a very steep sand hill, the fun part began as I sledded down the hill at pretty fast speeds! I think I did about 5 or 6 trips up and down the hill. So much fun! Sand went everywhere and was all in my hair, but it was worth it. On our way back to the bus, a flash rain storm came through and completely drenched everyone in a matter of seconds. It lasted about 3 minutes long and then pasted, leaving a beautiful rainbow over the hill we had been boarding down!

First day on the Island was great!!! We slept in nice quality bunks for the night and needed lots of sleep for the big day ahead tomorrow!

Spring Break Aussie Style

Hello from Adelaide!

I thought I would give everyone a glimpse into my next big, amazing, exciting, once in a life time, I am so lucky... adventure!!! :)

It is so nice of Flinders Uni to give us a two week holiday in the middle of the semester, and it is even nicer that Easter and a public holiday called Anzac day fall at the end of the break. So in total I have from Friday, April 8th to classes beginning again on Wednesday, April 27 OFF TO TRAVEL AND ENJOY AUSTRALIA!!! Could I ask for anything more??!! (maybe have my parents come visit!) I will jump on a computer at any chance I can but all my blog updates will most likely not happen till I am back in Adelaide with my computer! Also, I promise to take tons of photos!!!! I have two photo cards, each holding over 400 photos, so I hope that will be enough!! Here is what my itinerary looks like:

April 9-10 : Kangaroo Island
April 12-15 : Cairns, Great Barrier Reef, Green Island, snorkeling, beach
April 16-19 : Melbourne
April 19- 24 : Tour of the Outback, beginning in Alice Springs, stopping at Uluru, The Olgas, Kings Canyon, Coober Pedy, and many more places finishing in Adelaide
April 25-26 : SLEEP and RECOVER (plus upload a million photos)

I am very excited! Still don't know how I am going to pack for all of this and live out of a tiny carry-on suitcase for so long. Oh the joys!! :) Be looking out for updates! I'm so excited! :)

Lakes Entrance + Wedding!

March 31- April 4, 2011

This past weekend, I travelled from Adelaide to Melbourne (by plane) then onto Lakes Entrance (by car) where I joined the Lewis family for a fun weekend of food, beach, drinks, mini golf, and a beautiful wedding. The group of us (9 people) stayed at a lovely waterfront rental home with a big enough backyard for the two puppies to run around and play. Within minutes of arriving, everyone was relaxing out on the lawn enjoying the sunshine and catching up. I even saw some beautiful black swans and cockatoos in the wild!! :) Our first night we attended a dinner at a place called Mariam's, which is a family owned restaurant by Eddie's second cousin (I believe). The bride and groom where there along with a lot of other family members and friends. Great atmosphere and great food!

Friday, Eddie, his mum, Mel, Ange, Merv, Bruce and myself all headed to the beaches for the early afternoon! It was a beautiful day!! Lakes Entrance is made up of a bunch of islands, waterways, and entrances to the ocean. The beach we went to, you can only get to by boat or long foot bridge and is called the '90 mile island' (but I was informed that it really isn't 90 miles long haha). Naps were had by all when we got back followed by a bunch of card games, Pictionary tournament, BBQ, and some yummy wine. Also on Friday, a group of us went to play mini golf which was so much fun! Ben and Eddie's dad tied for course winners! I came in 4th place out 7. Started off strong, winning after the first nine holes, then faded to the back of the pack.

Saturday, an early start to the wedding day with a wine tasting boat cruise around the 'Lakes'. Eddie's uncle, owner of the winery, joined us on the boat tour with his selection of red and white's and knowledge about wine! What a great way to get around and see all the different islands, on a boat!! My favorite wines were a Riesling and a Cabernet Sauvignon. After being on the boat and wine tasting, it was time for some quick lunch then had to start getting dressed up for the wedding at 3pm. The ceremony was on the grounds of the vineyard, outside, and we all stood. Beautiful music, flowers, cute little kids running around, it felt very comfortable and a lovely feeling amongst friends and family. After the ceremony, we all hung out in the winery, chatting, eating great food, music, etc. Great time had by all. I really liked how at the beginning of the evening, the food was very fancy and nibbles, and towards the end of the night when everyone had a few drinks in them, the fish & chips came out, potato wedges and other fried/great food while at a party!!

Sunday, had a nice sleep-in and then hit the road by mid-afternoon. Once back in Melbourne, Eddie and I headed to Bacchus Marsh for a pub meal and a catch-up with his good friends. I finally had a good steak after so so long. YUM!

Monday, spent the day relaxing. Was able to get an awesome deal on my return flight ticket, which I now arrive home July 26th. EEK!!!!!

Busy week ahead with lots and lots of adventures and awesome experiences to come over our Spring Break!!! :)
